In 1995, the socalled solidarity surcharge was introduced to finance the necessary investments in such parts of Germany that used to be known as DDR (German Democratic Republic). The surcharge is now running at 5.5 % of the amount of income or of company tax. The abolition of the solidarity surcharge seems rather unlikely, for the foreseeable future.
